African culture shows the prevalence of braids but the history was never documented as it was with the Egyptians. Both men and women in the African culture braided their hair. This was shown through the various engravings and sculptures. In certain parts of Africa, hair braiding was reserved for the young men who were about to emerge from childhood into a recognized adult by the tribe.
